“Um, who is you?” Some ghetto brown-skinned chick came to the door naked. I peeked in and saw a slightly older man, rock hard, on top of the covers, taking a few puffs of the drug.

I looked at the door, and then at the keys: they both read “112.”

“I must have the wrong room. I’m sorry.” Once I got back to the office, a fine thug-looking dude walked in in front of me. He looked like James. Knowing how I must have appeared, I became embarrassed. He didn’t even acknowledge my presence.

“S’up, dude,” Freddie greeted him with big eyes and a smile.

“I’m good, Freddie. What about you?” I couldn’t believe what I was seeing. He was all up in Freddie’s face as if he were the best thing in the room.

Compared to me, in my present condition, he might’ve been. I watched as Freddie licked his lips and leaned forward toward the man. Their eyes met, and Freddie seemed to taunt me, let ting me know that he was going home with the prize for the night, not me. Freddie wrote something down on a piece of paper, then stuffed it in the man’s hand. The man lifted his extra-long white T and put the folded paper in his back pocket. I admired how his red-and-white striped boxers followed the curve of his perfectly shaped behind. When the man turned around, I saw that he resembled a lighter version of Trey Songz more than he did James. He looked back at me and my heart broke.

Why do all the fine ones have to be gay? I wondered. I shook my head, trying to dispel the question.

Freddie turned his attention to me, breaking me from my thoughts. “What are you doing back so soon?”

“I need another room. Someone’s in the other one.”

“Oh, my bad.” Freddie relieved me of the keys he gave me and handed me another set for room 115. He pulled out his walkie-talkie and paged the maid on duty. Upon getting confirmation that the room was available, he said, “Enjoy your night and get that money.”

My eyes opened wide and my mouth dropped open. No, he didn’t call me out like that, I thought, but I wasn’t going to curse him out. I looked at the clock on the wall and knew that Tiki would be arriving in a few minutes. The men wouldn’t be too far behind her. I’d have to deal with this he/she that called itself Freddie another day.

I walked to the room—my home for the night. At least this one had only a cigarette smell, and the bed was made. I wanted so badly to jump into the shower and give myself a real good cleaning, but I decided against it. I didn’t want to use the washcloths or towels that hundreds of people probably used for hundreds of purposes. The wash up at the gas station had to do. I sat on the bed, and for a moment, stared at the reflection on the mirror.
